A beautiful blur

 Sometimes I forget why I do photography and need to be reminded. See its not for me about the pictures I take when I travel (although I enjoy that) or about experimenting. For me I'm most alive when taking pictures when the photo I'm taking speaks to my soul and most of the time it does that when its abstract, when the world is a beautiful blur of color and motion.

I went out tonight and I took photos for me, I twisted the camera trying to create the images I wanted. To capture the feeling that would refresh my soul and for me that's not found in static images or people protraits but in an abstract expression of how truely beautiful the world is.

When the world you capture with your camera is a beautiful, colourful blur its all you need to keep the art in your soul alive.

The colours of decay

For me autumn is a time for the beautiful and slow creep of decay as the season ticks slowly over into the depths of winter. The leaves change colour and sweep off the trees, the air becomes crisp and cold and wind and rain lash member of the public poor enough to be caught without an umbrella on their commute to work.

It was this sense of colourful decay that I set out to capture with my camera today. At first I was setting out to capture the changing of the season through the subtle shift of nature in the urban world, but as usually when I actually got halfway through taking pictures the emphesis had begun to change.

I grew fascinated by the disintegrating posters that had peeled away to leave layers of vibrate colour behind, the rusted garage doors now covered in metallic street art and the vibrate graffiti scrawled over the streets of Cardiff.

Entropy had caused the world to drip and melt with a rainbow of hues and shades. And what I had come out to photograph had changed, instead of the natural oncoming of autumn I had caught instead the urban world's vibrate colours of decay.

Seasons of Mist

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too, While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;

And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn. - To Autumn, John Keats

Outside of somewhere like Canada I would argue that wales is one of the best places to experience autumn. The leaves on trees shift from green to red to gold and are finally swept from their moorings by autumnal storms.

Mist veils the world in an ethereal haze and crisp mornings leave fields frosted over with dew. And after a days of kicking your way through leaves you can always retired to your local pub to warm up and get in a pint.

These pictures were taken on a day out in abercynon, on a particularly scenic trail that carried you up into the hills and wooded areas that surrounded the area. With sunlight filtering through clouds, leaves crunching underfoot and stunning views over the surrounding fields it proves autumn in Britain really is an inspiring time to get out and take some pictures.

October nights

I love autumn for the simple fact that as a photographer the colours and effects you get at night can be simply stunning.

For example I have developed an obsession with shadows recently and the effects and portraits you can create with them. With the adding of leaves on the ground and a bit of experiment with shutter speed while zooming and walking I was able to create the effect of one of these pictures.
Other pictures I took simply by keeping an eye open for details that might lend themselves for using a low shutter speed and by experimenting with taking pictures on the move.

Autumn photos

Welcome to my new blog, I'm a photographer based in newport and cardiff and I wanted to share my art with the world. These are new autumnal shots I've taken.

Autumn for me is a time when the world changes and is in transition, its not quite one thing or the other and in that moment of transition you can find both beauty, warmth and a profound sense of loss. I like to think my photos reflection that and speak about the beauty of the natural world during this time.

To create these images I use alot of close ups or long exposures, I think this helps to create images that, like autumn itself, are transient, in motion or capture a moment in time that might at any moment become lost.
